“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”

Steven Spielberg’s beloved adventure series has built its own Temple of Hype — but the latest installment manages to surprise and delight.

A few months back, just before the release of Chak De India,” I happened to be standing near a poster for the movie at PVR Bangalore. A young man, who looked to be in his 20s, walked up and, after spending a few seconds surveying the image of hockey playing girls in their quaint get-ups — like hockey players from another world — said to his girlfriend, a little wistfully, “I don’t know why, but I want to see this.”

: There are many reasons why the Rajasthan Royals won. Many more will now be unearthed, for every event, significant or otherwise, will now find profound meaning. There are many practitioners of retro-fit, finding weighty answers for normal events when the result is already known. Indeed, Shane Warne will become a better captain with every passing day and he will have a jolly laugh over it — with a beer and a cigarette watching his favourite St Kilda team play footy.

Quite aside from the result, which is more a by-product of great performance than an end in itself anyway, what was wonderful to watch was how a diverse set of people were able to bond under someone they had never met before. The key to it is understanding each player, accepting oddities and insecurities they may have and working with the person as much as with the cricketer.

IPL vs ICL: A real contest is possible only in a free market!

Given that the IPL is ‘official’, it is inevitable that it will have more clout than the ICL. A real contest is only possible in a free market. This isn’t a free market. In this fight, one side has an advantage.

CRICKET HISTORIAN, DR BORIA MAJUMDAR

The old adage of first mover advantage does not hold true. Ask the Indian Premier League! Despite coming late but well-armed and neatly packaged, the newest avatar of cricket has caught on like wild-fire, much to the chagrin of the supporters of the ‘unofficial’ Indian Cricket League, the under-dog. Despite claiming to be progressive, does the new breed of couch-potato Indians still give in to the allure of ‘officialdom’? “Given that the IPL i s “official”, it is inevitable that it will have more clout than the ICL. A real contest is possible only in a free market. This isn’t a free market. In this fight, one side has an advantage,” reasoned cricket historian, Dr Boria Majumdar when Business Line asked him.

Though he thinks Twenty20 has once again successfully introduced that ‘element of uncertainty integral to cricket’, the research fellow at Latrobe University, Australia, feels it’s good for the game as teams will now have more chances to redeem failures; fans will however find it far easier to erase memories of past disasters!
